Thousands of Irish Spotify users will be asked to undergo additional security procedures this week after the company admitted that it had suffered a security breach.

The online music streaming company said that because of the hacking, customers using its service on Android smartphones will be required to re-enter login details and update their app.

In a blog post today, the Swedish streaming service, which recently announced that it has 40m users and 10m paying users, said that it had suffered “unauthorised access” to its “systems and internal company data”. The company said that this occurred on a single account and that no sensitive data was stolen or leaked.

“We’ve become aware of some unauthorised access to our systems and internal company data,” said Oskar Stal, Spotify’s chief technical officer.

“Our evidence shows that only one Spotify user’s data has been accessed and this did not include any password, financial or payment information. We have contacted this one individual. Based on our findings, we are not aware of any increased risk to users as a result of this incident.”

However, the company said that the breach would affect Android users’ security clearance.

“We take these matters very seriously and as a general precaution will be asking certain Spotify users to re-enter their username and password to log in over the coming days,” said Stal.

“As an extra safety step, we are going to guide Android app users to upgrade over the next few days. If Spotify prompts you for an upgrade, please follow the instructions.”

Stal said that there is “no action recommended” for iPhone, iPad or Windows Phone users.

The move comes a week after eBay admitted that it had been hacked, exposing the personal data of 145m global users including at least 100,000 Irish users.
